4 Benefits of Adult Resilience

Two things define you: your patience when you have nothing and your attitude when you have everything.”

Whether you're dealing with health issues, coping with bad relationships, or battling unexpected expenses; increasing your resilience skills offers you major benefits: an improved attitude, stronger connections and a deeper sense of meaning in life. The greater your resilience, the greater your quality of life.

Laughter is medicine for the soul. When your spirit is lifted, your mind opens up to unlimited possibilities. Humor means seeing things from a different, comical viewpoint. Humor means telling yourself that no matter what the outcome, you’ll find a way to laugh through the fear. With humor, instead of feeling defeated or depressed, you can cope with your unexpected changes in a more powerful and controllable way. Health concerns are a common issue for every adult. With every doctor’s visit, there is the uncertainty of a negative outcome or diagnosis. Even with good self care, the fear of being told that something is going wrong inside, can be a threat to your total independence. Are you experiencing memory loss issues? With humor, feel free to say, “No problem, I won’t remember that tomorrow anyway.”

Strong relationships are built on shared feelings and good communication. Expressing your true feelings with friends and family during challenging times, is sometimes painful but necessary, to strengthen your spirit. For example, your hot water heater has exploded and the repairs are estimated at over a thousand dollars. You know there is only $475  in your checking account. What do you do? Where do you go? You could get upset and pity yourself, saying, “Why me? Why is this happening now? I don’t have this kind of money right now! What am I going to do?”

Or, you can call a loved one and ASK them to help you through this unexpected emergency. It may hurt your pride, but you'll grow stronger for asking for the help, rather than suffering in silence. It is more important that you have caring, supportive connections that are willing to let you vent your frustrations, share some good advice and help you when possible. In fact, creating stronger relationships generally develops a desire to reach a deeper meaning and purpose for your life.

We all crave a deeper meaning in life, don't we?. Love, happiness, peace or prosperity doesn't have a place in our life without meaning. That’s why having a strong faith system and high personal expectations are necessary. Don’t get me wrong. You can live your life just fine without either one, but the quality will be totally different. Faith is defined as "the substance of things ‘hoped for” and the evidence of the unseen", which means you have to believe in something you can’t see, to make it your reality. Your thoughts and actions have to line up with what you believe about your life in order to reach your intended goals.

Take action to make your dreams come true. If you want to be a tennis pro, but you've never practice your tennis game, how are you going to be a pro? If you want to live healthier, but you eat king-size Snicker bars twice a day, how’s that going to happen? You must set goals for your life and stick to them. You must believe in what you can’t see, even when temptation is all around you. It’s hard, but your faith is stronger. You're stronger...just believe.

I strongly believe that your humor, insight, independence, initiative, positive connections, and faith ALL work together as a superpower. It’s called RESILIENCE!
